As contributors to Revolutionary steps from monarchy I will consider Adam Smith and Thomas Hobbes.
Beginning the third paragraph of the fifth chapter of The Wealth of Nation, Adam Smith writes, "Wealth, as Mr. Hobbes says, is power."
Thomas Hobbes, in Leviathan, continues, "Also riches joined with liberality is Power, because it procureth friends and servants, without liberality not so, because in this case they defend not but expose men to envy as prey."
So here is where I insert the need to contend only defense is conservative to which any aggression added becomes liberality. The acquiring of any defenses beyond self is aggression, thus liberal. Spending more than you have is liberal. Debt can never be conservative, so no banks can operate conservatively.
Is this where conservative purists developed pathological denial of the need to share equal and opposite realism as stated in "Golden Rule" formations? The value of criticism as a punitive tool will create costs that hide behind denial and undermine the honesty in balanced existence. This is how contentment gets confused with the happiness that depends on experiencing frustration for comparison measurement.
